The reason cortisol is thrown off is often due to a misalignment in the bones of the upper neck, particularly the C1 and C2 vertebrae. If one has experienced any trauma that has affected the head or neck – even if it was minor – the connective tissue can break down, leading to the spine locking into a position of stress. A study was conducted by Dr. Dickholtzz, Sr., an upper cervical chiropractor, and his assistants – a psychiatrist and a general practitioner – to see how a misalignment in the neck impacts cortisol production and, in turn, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.
