Fibromyalgia Linked to Improper Cortisol Levels

Fibromyalgia, Fatigue, Chronic Fatigue, Always Tired, Tired, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS, Fibromyalgia Relief, Chronic Fatigue Relief

Interestingly, irregular cortisol levels have been seen to play a significant role in the development of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. The reason cortisol is thrown off is often due to a misalignment in the bones of the upper neck, particularly the C1 and C2 vertebrae. If one has experienced any trauma that has affected the head or neck – even if it was minor – the connective tissue can break down, leading to the spine locking into a position of stress. When a misalignment occurs in this sensitive area, the brainstem is negatively affected causing a number of health problems, potentially including the irregular release of cortisol.

Does It Really Matter How Much Cortisol is Released?

Cortisol is one of the main hormones in the body and is vital to several important bodily functions. It plays a major role in the following:

  • Glucose production
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Immune system function
  • Stress and inflammation
  • Allergies and rheumatoid conditions
  • Healing damage to the body
  • Metabolizing carbs, protein, and fat
  • Low blood glucose and stress
  • Sleep

Therefore, it is plain to see that too little or too much cortisol can be detrimental to the body and the brain. Is there anything that can help?

Effects on Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue

A study was conducted by Dr. Dickholtzz, Sr., an upper cervical chiropractor, and his assistants – a psychiatrist and a general practitioner – to see how a misalignment in the neck impacts cortisol production and, in turn, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. After an initial adjustment, the patients were evaluated 6 months later. Here are the results:

  • General health increased from 35% to 55%
  • Physical function improved from 58% to 85%
  • Social function went from 40% to 70%
  • Mental health increased from 50% to 70%
  • Vitality went from 17% all the way to 55%

These results clearly show the importance of proper spinal alignment to overall health and in coping with such conditions as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Seeking our care, here at Premier Family Wellness and Spinal Care, is a great place to start.
