What Causes Sciatica in Farmington?

Sciatica in Farmington Michigan

Sciatica results from irritation or compression of either the sciatic nerve itself or one of the nerve roots (there are five). While medication may mask the pain, it does not address the underlying problem that may continue to worsen over time. Consider the following potential causes of sciatica:

  • Herniated disc – If a disc in the lower part of your spine is out of position, the result can be pressure on your sciatic nerve or the nerve roots.
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis – The spinal canal starts at the brainstem and travels the length of your back. If that canal becomes too narrow in the lower back, the result may be pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Pregnancy – An unborn child in the womb may place pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Piriformis Syndrome – A neuromuscular condition, Piriformis Syndrome can result in compression of the sciatic nerve.
  • Bulging Disc – When a disc bulges out too far between vertebrae, it can press on nerves.

Of course, those are just a few of the things that can cause sciatica. A much more serious cause would be something like a tumor that is pressing on the nerve.

Winning the Battle With Sciatica

Rather than simply masking the pain of sciatica with prescription or over-the-counter drugs, upper cervical chiropractic care offers a real relief option. Dr. Chris Perkins of Farmington, Michigan would be happy to assist you in determining the true cause of your pain.

Surprisingly, your sciatica may be the result of a head or neck injury. Research shows that even a slight misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae can cause problems all over the body, including the lower back, hips, and legs. This is because the head being out of position causes a shift in the muscles and bones of the neck and back.

Dr. Perkins specializes in the realignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. This may, in turn, provide gentle and medication-free relief of your pain.
