Migraines can be disabling to the one suffering from them. Nearly 50% of people in the world have migraines or another form of headache condition. They are difficult to diagnose and even harder to find a solution for as each migraine is unique to the person dealing with it.
Medication is generally prescribed to help the pain, but unless the root cause is addressed, head pain will continue to happen. Patients are trending toward natural forms of care, if available, as these often have fewer negative side effects.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, and a disorder here is a problem with the joint that connects the jaw and the skull. Dental research has linked migraines to TMJ, and large amounts of research have gone into studying the relationship between migraines and the jaw. This area of the body is vital to both proper neurological and vascular function.

As noted above, finding a lasting solution to migraines involves finding the underlying cause. This has been connected to a misalignment located in the upper neck vertebrae, particularly the C1 and C2 – the top two bones of the spine. If these bones are out of alignment, they can also put pressure on the nerves in the face and create TMJ pain.
Here at Perkins Family Wellness and Spinal Care, we have seen much success in helping migraine patients. We begin by taking the patient’s history, examining the neck, and using modern technology to find any misalignments. Once located, we use a gentle method that does not involve popping or cracking the spine. Rather, it encourages the bones of the neck to move back into place naturally.
After the C1 and C2 are properly aligned, the body can begin functioning optimally once again. Pressure is reduced on the facial nerves and the pain of TMJ, tinnitus, and head pain can lessen. This will also restore any negative effects from the misalignment, such as issues with blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow to and from the brain. Some have seen their head pain go away once these things are corrected.

Migraines are a neurological condition that often presents with a moderate to severe headache, nausea, and sensory sensitivities. Besides medication, doctors often recommend keeping a journal to identify and avoid as many migraine triggers as possible. Migraine triggers are often unique to each person. However, stress is one extremely common trigger.
It’s interesting that researchers have found day-to-day stresses result in more migraines than big life adjustments (like moving or the loss of a loved one). As a result, it is important to reduce daily stress in order to reduce the frequency of migraines. Let’s look at some ways to lower stress levels as well as consider another natural way to get help for migraines.
Here are 5 stress-reduction tips that may help you to have fewer migraines:

Other things like taking an occasional vacation or starting up a new hobby may also help. However, reducing stress is just a way of avoiding a migraine trigger. Is there a natural way to get to the underlying problem?
When the atlas (C1) is misaligned, it can affect blood flow to the brain, cerebrospinal fluid drainage, and brainstem function. These are all factors that can be tied to migraines. For many, this misalignment was caused by a head or neck trauma, but normal wear and tear can also take its toll on this extremely mobile vertebra.
An atlas adjustment has helped many patients in case studies to experience fewer migraine or even find complete relief. At Premier Family Wellness and Spinal Care, we strive to provide our patients with similar results. A concussion is defined as a traumatic brain injury due to a blow to the body or head, a fall, or any injury that shakes the brain inside the skull. Loss of consciousness is not necessary in order to be diagnosed with a concussion.
In some cases, a person may not even realize that he or she has a concussion if the injury experienced was not severe. It is dangerous to leave this untreated because it can cause changes to brain function over time. It is important to know and look for the symptoms listed below:

Chances are if a person has been hit hard enough to have a concussion, some damage has been done to the neck also. The bone that sits just beneath the skull is called the C1 or atlas bone. This bone has the responsibility of holding the head in the proper position.
It makes sense then that a blow to the head or body that results in the head being forced backward, forward, or side to side can result in this bone becoming misaligned. This can be the reason for the symptoms of concussions—headaches in particular.
A good place to start if a person thinks they may have a concussion is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. At Premier Family Wellness, we begin an exam by taking a close look at the upper neck using specific x-rays that help determine precisely where the misalignment has occurred.
Once this is determined, a gentle adjustment that does not involve popping or twisting the spine is used. The body then takes over and begins using its healing properties to repair the damage done to muscles and tissues. Many patients see results after only a few adjustment and report feeling much better overall.

There are two types of headaches that an individual can experience, primary and secondary headaches. A primary headache is one that is caused by nerve damage or a reduced flow of blood or oxygen to the brain. A secondary headache is one that can be caused by other experiences or environmental factors.
If you drink coffee, you may have experienced a secondary headache if you have too little caffeine, or even too much. Injury or sickness can also trigger this type of a headache. Concussions and neck injuries are common examples of this. With a concussion, the brain is bruised by hitting the inside of the skull. Whiplash can cause neck muscles to over-extend and cause harm to the region. When these types of injuries occur, secondary headaches are experienced by many.

A sudden onset of head pain could be due to the aforementioned incidents. Resolving in a way that will result in long-term relief is possible. It may be that a misalignment occurred in the upper cervical region of the spine when the trauma occurred to the head or neck. Even a tiny misplacement of these vertebrae has the potential to cause pain and other complications. This is due to an interruption of communication between the brain and the body. Blood and oxygen flow are often affected as well.
Usually realigning the out of place vertebra will remove the cause of the issues. Relieving pressure from this vital region in the neck will allow for open communication and restore the flow of blood and oxygen. With the root cause of the headaches properly resolved, healing can begin naturally. If you are experiencing these types of head pain, feel free to give us a call. An assessment will help determine if we can ease the pain you are experiencing.
