A concussion is defined as a traumatic brain injury due to a blow to the body or head, a fall, or any injury that shakes the brain inside the skull. Loss of consciousness is not necessary in order to be diagnosed with a concussion.
In some cases, a person may not even realize that he or she has a concussion if the injury experienced was not severe. It is dangerous to leave this untreated because it can cause changes to brain function over time. It is important to know and look for the symptoms listed below:

Chances are if a person has been hit hard enough to have a concussion, some damage has been done to the neck also. The bone that sits just beneath the skull is called the C1 or atlas bone. This bone has the responsibility of holding the head in the proper position.
It makes sense then that a blow to the head or body that results in the head being forced backward, forward, or side to side can result in this bone becoming misaligned. This can be the reason for the symptoms of concussions—headaches in particular.
A good place to start if a person thinks they may have a concussion is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. At Premier Family Wellness, we begin an exam by taking a close look at the upper neck using specific x-rays that help determine precisely where the misalignment has occurred.
Once this is determined, a gentle adjustment that does not involve popping or twisting the spine is used. The body then takes over and begins using its healing properties to repair the damage done to muscles and tissues. Many patients see results after only a few adjustment and report feeling much better overall.
