Meniere’s disease patients may experience a range of symptoms that can have a devastating effect on quality of life, but there is hope.
Meniere's symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and a ringing in the ears can last from 20 minutes to four hours, but sometimes the most severe symptoms such as vertigo, nausea, and vomiting can last for much longer, in some cases days.
The syndrome tends to affect those aged 20-50 years old and is thought to be triggered by irregular levels of fluid in the inner ear, which maintains a person’s balance. However, since scientists have been unable to pinpoint the exact cause of this irregularity, there are a variety of different relief care being offered by physicians.
These relief care range from changes to lifestyle such as low-salt diets to more invasive options like injections to the inner ear and surgery. Of course, many patients will only choose to relieve symptoms with painkillers, or by taking special medication (such as anti-vertigo tablets).
By nature, all these relief care will have different success rates, but now several studies have found that there may be a link between the symptoms of Meniere’s and irregularities in the upper neck. Professor Hulse from Heidelberg University found that the Meniere's symptoms of 259 patients could be related to problems with their upper cervical spine. He also discovered that in a study of 62 patients, hearing problems could be remedied by chiropractic methods.
This study is offering new hope to people suffering from Meniere’s. An upper cervical chiropractor is able to see whether there are any problems in the upper neck (including the atlas and axis bones). By realigning bones that have moved from their normal position, we can help reduce symptoms.
For this reason, it makes sense for anyone who has suffered a neck injury or sufferers from any symptoms related to Meniere’s disease to consult an upper cervical chiropractor.
