Migraines can be disabling to the one suffering from them. Nearly 50% of people in the world have migraines or another form of headache condition. They are difficult to diagnose and even harder to find a solution for as each migraine is unique to the person dealing with it.
Medication is generally prescribed to help the pain, but unless the root cause is addressed, head pain will continue to happen. Patients are trending toward natural forms of care, if available, as these often have fewer negative side effects.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, and a disorder here is a problem with the joint that connects the jaw and the skull. Dental research has linked migraines to TMJ, and large amounts of research have gone into studying the relationship between migraines and the jaw. This area of the body is vital to both proper neurological and vascular function.

As noted above, finding a lasting solution to migraines involves finding the underlying cause. This has been connected to a misalignment located in the upper neck vertebrae, particularly the C1 and C2 – the top two bones of the spine. If these bones are out of alignment, they can also put pressure on the nerves in the face and create TMJ pain.
Here at Perkins Family Wellness and Spinal Care, we have seen much success in helping migraine patients. We begin by taking the patient’s history, examining the neck, and using modern technology to find any misalignments. Once located, we use a gentle method that does not involve popping or cracking the spine. Rather, it encourages the bones of the neck to move back into place naturally.
After the C1 and C2 are properly aligned, the body can begin functioning optimally once again. Pressure is reduced on the facial nerves and the pain of TMJ, tinnitus, and head pain can lessen. This will also restore any negative effects from the misalignment, such as issues with blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow to and from the brain. Some have seen their head pain go away once these things are corrected.
